The Jewish calendar is based on their belief of the date that the universe was created: 3761 BCE. The abbreviation "AM" for Anno Mundi is used. The Jewish year lasts from 354 to 385 days.
Their calendar is lunisolar, the years being solar and the months lunar. As with the Muslim calendar the year is of twelve months that alternate 29 and 30 days in length. In order to celebrate the festivals in their proper season the difference between the lunar (354 days) and the solar (365½ days) is made up by intercalating a thirteenth month of 30 days in the 3rd, 6th, 8th, 11th, 14th, 17th and 19th year of a nineteen-year cycle. This month is called Addar Sheni (second Addar).
The year commences on the New Moon of Tishri. The months are counted beginning at Nissan.
